Ben Hogan: An American Life Review

An American Life by James Dodson - Golf Instruction Book Review Image Like all great biographies, Ben Hogan: An American Life by James Dodson is a wonderfully written story of a man who had to overcome many incredible obstacles in his life, to become what many people believe to be one of the greatest golfers of all time!

James Dodson allows the reader to live in the Hogan era, so you can experience and feel the successes and tragedies of Ben Hogan's turbulent life. As a young boy Hogan suffered a dark and terrifying event, when his father committed suicide right before his eyes.

For years he kept this traumatic experience to himself and it wasn't until he had been married to his wife Valerie for many years that he revealed the true horrifying facts concerning the death of his father.

It took Ben Hogan several attempts to succeed on the professional golf tour and it wasn't until his third attempt that he began to win with any form of regularity and even though he won many tournaments, the goal of winning a major championship was not going to come easy. Three times he reached the final hole of a major event and 3 putted each time to clinch defeat from the jaws of victory. In fact it took 30 tournament wins before Ben Hogan won his first Major title.

This was at the PGA Championships in 1946, which is still a record today for the most victories before winning a Major!
But there was one defining event in Hogan's life that took place in 1949. After achieving stardom on the professional golf circuit, Ben Hogan and his wife Valerie were nearly killed in a head on collision with a bus, doctors at the time feared for Hogan's life and doubted that he would be able to walk again if he survived.

Not only did Hogan make a miraculous recovery but he went on to win the U.S. Open at Merion in 1950, an amazing physical feat, especially considering he had to play 36 holes on the final Saturday of the Tournament!

James Dodson has truly captured the essence of Hogan's life and the early era of professional golf, in Ben Hogan's 'An American Life' golf book and like all great biographys it is more than a story of one person's life. It covers the stories of those who touched Hogan's life and is a fantastic read that every avid golfer should experience.
