How To Choose A Golf Putter!

How to choose a Putter? now this is a very difficult question to answer! Even some of the greatest golfers in the world have struggled to find that perfect putter! Take Arnold Palmer for example has collected more than 3,000 putters over the years.

I could talk to you about alignment aids, inserts, MOI, the different types of shafts and materials used, etc, however, in my opinion the most important factor to consider when choosing a golf putter is to find one that you love the look and feel of.

I say this because FEEL and CONFIDENCE are everything when it comes to putting. A putter that is aesthetically pleasing and feels good, has to be an excellent starting point. Once you have found your dream putter! you will also need to make sure that it is the right length, most putters will range from 33" to 36", so find one that fits your natural putting position, i.e. the stance and posture you are comfortable with when you address the ball.

To make sure that the putter is the correct length for you, check that the sole of the putter head is flat on the ground when assuming your natural putting setup position. If the toe end is raised slightly, then the putter is too long and if the heal end is raised then the putter is too short. The consequences of having a putter that is not the right length can be dramatic, you will be surprised at the incredible difference it makes to your consistency and ball striking.......just remember not to adjust your stance and putting posture to fit the putter, the putter needs to fit you!

Another thought you may want to consider, especially if you play most of your golf on one particular course, is the speed of the greens. If your greens are relatively slow then choosing a putter with more weight would certainly make sense, on the other hand if they are considered to be fairly quick then a lighter model would be better. The green speed will also have an influence on the putter loft that you choose, if the greens are heavier and rougher you will benefit from choosing a golf putter with a higher loft, as this will help with gaining some initial momentum.

The consequences of having a putter that is not the right length can be dramatic, you will be surprised at the incredible difference it will make to your consistency and golf ball striking....... just remember not to adjust your stance and putting posture to fit the putter, the putter needs to fit you!
