Callaway idTECH Range Finder Review

The Callaway idTECH golf laser range finder has been designed in conjunction with optical specialists Nikon to provide golfers with fast, simple and accurate range finding, as well as offering yardage adjustments to compensate for the inclines/declines of the course.

Measuring 5.1 x 1.8 x 2.7 and weighing 7.4 ounces the Callaway idTECH range finder is a standard size slope edition rangefinder and apart from the Bushnell Hybrid unit, which combines the functions of a range finder and golf GPS unit, the Callaway idTECH is unique in the fact that it also provides an external LCD display.

With a maximum range of 550 yards the Callaway idTECH golf laser rangefinder does fall short of some of the competition like the Busnell Pro 1M Slope that offers a range of 1 mile (1670 yards). Having said that the idtech is accurate to within 1/2 yard and a 550 yard range is more than ample for most golfers needs.

Similar to all of the recent Callaway Range Finders, the idTECH features First Target Priority Mode. This feature works on the same principle as PinSeeker on the Bushnell models and PinHunter on the Leupold models and makes it a lot easier to lock onto pin positions. The key feature that separates the Callaway idTECH range finder and other Slope Edition Range Finders from the Tournament Legal Models is slope technology. This technology provides additional information in the form of adjusted distance measurements that take into account the angle of slope.

Although slope technology can help you to make significantly better club selection decisions on the golf course, it is unfortunately deemed to be non-legal for competition or tournament use, so slope edition range finders can only be used in friendly competition or for practicing purposes. Some of the newer models like the Leupold GX-4i provide more advanced features to help you develop your game, including a club selection function, that takes custom distance measuring to a new level and makes suggestions on which club you should use for your next shot.

The Callaway idTECH range finder also provides a useful scan mode that allows you to hold the power button down for about 25 seconds and pan across the landscape to receive constantly updated distance readings of the targets that appear in the crosshairs. It also benefits from Nikon's multi-coated optics for improved visibility and has a durable waterproof and fog proof construction, that will last the tests of time and can be used in all weather conditions.

In many ways the Callaway idTECH range finder has been superseded by the new Callaway IQ model, however it is still one of the cheapest models in its class with a recommended retail price of $399.95. This makes it an affordable option for those golfers who are looking to benefit from the additional features that a slope edition range finder can offer. If you are interested in buying the idTECH then you can find the Lowest Prices at Amazon.com

Callaway idTECH Customer Reviews From Amazon:

A complete waste of money - September 17, 2010 by Catherine Masterson
The Callaway idTECH rangefinder is usless, it gives you 2 distance readings and the degrees between them and then makes you calculate the yardage! Buy a Bushnell Range Finder, their slope reading rangfinders do the math for you and display the calcualted yardage based on the slope. Nikon support is also horrible and Callaway should drop them. I took my idTECH range finder back and will never buy another Nikon rangefinder again.

Poor rangefinder for the money - August 10, 2009 by U. Patel
I purchased this thinking that between Nikon and Callaway you couldn't have a bad product. Well i was wrong, the idtech range finder has a hard time picking up the flagstick, especially when there are trees behind it. It will give you the trees distance rather than the flagstick. I compared this to my friends Bushnell 1500, and his was able to pick up the flagstick quicker and distance was accurate. I had to keep scanning to get the flagstick, i knew I got it because the yardage was on par with the bushnell. It is NOT worth the money. If you play on courses with no trees behind the green, then this may work for you. But otherwise go with the Bushnell.

Great rangefinder - but a little expensive - July 16, 2009 by M. Kincade
Got the Callaway idTECH Range Finder a couple of months ago for an anniversary present (thanks, honey!). I have really enjoyed it. Small enough to pack away, but sturdy enough to feel solid in your hand. Gives accurate readings from inside about 300 yards; I have not had any trouble picking up a flagstick from those distances, and it generally is good about finding distances to hazards, etc. It's helped me shave off 3-4 strokes off my score; I am now down to bogey golf. Getting my exact distances down with my clubs has allowed me to be more aggressive on par 3's and approach shots.

The slope feature is also nice; the LCD on the side displays the distance and the height differential, and you add or subtract the height from the distance to get your true shot distance. The info stays on the screen for 30 seconds so you can refer back to it as needed. Carrying case is sturdy, and battery life has been good so far. Still with full bars after about 15 - 20 rounds with it. The front cover has a velcro piece at the top and a snap at the bottom, so you uncover the eyepiece to use it and flip it back up to protect it. I would highly recommend the Callaway idTECH slope rangefinder if you don't mind spending the $$. Once the price drops and the newness wears off, it'll be an even better deal.

Best Tournament & Slope Edition Golf Rangefinders:

Apart from price, one of the most important things that you need to consider before buying a golf range finder, is what you are going to be using it for. When it comes to choosing a golf range finder there are two types that you can buy, you can either go for a Tournament Edition rangefinder or a Slope Edition rangefinder. Check below to learn the difference between the two and find out which models are the best Tournament and Slope edition range finders for 2012!

Best Tournament Edition Golf Range Finders

Best Tournament Legal Golf Rangefinders If you're looking for a golf laser range finder that can be used in competition or for handicap purposes then you will need to buy a Tournament Edition rangefinder, as these type of range finders provide line of sight distance measurements only and are deemed to be legal for tournament use (where local rules apply).

2012 has seen the release of some excellent new models from the market leading brands. These new rangefinders are faster at retrieving results and more accurate at laser ranging targets than ever before. Click the image to the left to learn all about the best Tournament edition golf range finders currently available!

Best Slope Edition Golf Laser Range Finders

Best Slope Edition Golf Laser Range Finders Slope Edition golf laser rangefinders are considered non-legal for tournament play because they offer additional features that provide adjusted yardage measurements which compensate for the natural inclines and declines of the course, and some even account for climate conditions and offer suggestions on club selection!

So if you just want a range finder to use in practice or to improve your game so you can gain that crucial edge over your golfing buddies, then a Slope edition range finder may very well be the one to consider.
